The festival, to take place Sept. 23 at the Lili'uokalani Protestant Church in Haleiwa, celebrates taro in all its many forms -- not just laulau, but also luau stew, poi and poi mochi, all of which will be available for eating.
Among the highlights is the laulau contest. To participate, submit your recipe with a $5 entry fee to Hui Kalo 'O Waialua by Sept. 20. Call Patti Ihori at 524-6441 for information and entry forms. On the day of the festival, bring 4 pounds of your cooked laulau for judging.
Categories are most creative, most traditional and healthiest. Criteria for judging: taste, texture, presentation and creativity. All entries must include luau leaf.
Those who prefer eating laulau to all that wrapping and steaming can sample the laulau entries for $1.
For information on the festival in general call 637-9364.
Hosts are Kona tennis professional, Barry Cutler and Lisa Phillips, director of the West Hawaii American Heart Association.
The series features local children and community resources and is filmed on location throughout the state.
The recipe was originally published in the July 7, 1999 Star-Bulletin and may be found on the Web at https://archives.starbulletin.com/1999/07/07/features/story2.html
