Malama opens
in Manoa
Nadine Kam The first of three Malama -- Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spas opens at 1 p.m. today in the old Toyo Superette at 2901 E. Manoa Road.
Star-BulletinFast work for owner Mary Suiter, who less than nine months ago denied her need for spa treatments.
"I've always been more of the type to give a massage than receive one because I like to help other people. And I stay in shape; I'm an aerobics instructor and most of the time go around thinking I'm OK," she said.
"Then last Christmas my husband got me a massage and facial while we were in Portland (Ore.), and as a consumer I'd always had an 'I don't need this' attitude, but I was blown away.
The new convert devoted her energy to bringing Aveda's services -- based on Ayurvedic principles of longevity and global healing principles -- to Hawaii. "Malama" means "to care for, to nurture."
She needed to look no further than her own life to see the need. "Our lifestyle is like everybody else's, with the two kids, the homework, the careers, sports. You do the best you can, and anything you find that keeps you balanced is great."
At first, only one salon spa was planned, for Ala Moana Center. That 5,000 square foot salon is set to have its soft opening Nov. 17. A third 12,000 square foot Malama is planned for Kailua in fall 2001. Spa services will start at $80 for a massage and $50 for a facial.
One of her goals is to return the favor to her husband, treating him to a Malama massage.
"I tried but I'll have to wait 'til he slows down. He won't sit still long enough."
