SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos scored two early goals that carried them to a 2-0, nonconference win over the University of Hawaii women's soccer team yesterday. UCSB uses early
goals to shut out
Hawaii, 2-0Hawaii (2-3-1) managed 11 shots but UCSB goalkeeper Lindsay Barr only had to make two saves.
Kathryn Fox scored on a penalty kick at 10:12 and Meghean Phillips headed in Brianna Preis' corner kick at 33:00 for the UC Santa Barbara (2-1-1) goals.
Liz Lusk played in the goal for UH in placed of Demarre Sanchez and Dana Ong, both injured.
"Liz did OK. We changed our entire system of play and didn't do too hot in the first half," UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
Tenzing decided four defenders was better with an inexperienced goalkeeper, but that move failed.
"I knew they were in our half of the field because of the formation. We made an adjustment at halftime and the whole tenor of the game changed," said Tenzing.
Still, the Wahine weren't able to finish on scoring opportunities. They have scored just two goals in the past 270 minutes.
The major concern this week will be the medical reports on the Wahine goalkeepers. UH doesn't have an emergency goalkeeper. Lusk volunteered when Sanchez and Ong were hurt.
"This takes us by surprise," Tenzing said. "We are going to train Liz big time or get some help from somebody on campus.
"I still feel we have a team and a game, but we need someone between the pipes. Our concern is to be ready for the WAC."
