ACRONYM LIST: If you HOPPE (Hawaii Opinion Poll on Public Education) to get an IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education ACT) of BASICS (Basic Academic Skills Improvement through Core Subjects) on acronyms and abbreviations, the Department of Education has a list for you.
The department has tallied 575 acronyms and abbreviations used by its people. Everything from the familiar "A+" for the after-school program to the not-so-familiar "T3" for Technology Training for Teachers.
As state Schools Superintendent Paul LeMahieu passed out the latest edition of the list to Board of Education members Thursday night, he lamented, "Sad to say, this is a living document. We never seem to throw anything off."
Board member Herbert Watanabe, who says the guide helps alleviate confusion for members of the public who may not know what the abbreviations mean when department personnel use them, received his copy and remarked, "It's four pages longer."
BACKING FOR KIM: The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers and its Hawaii Chapter are supporting Harry Kim for Big Island mayor.
Their other Hawaii County endorsements are Brenda Carreira for prosecutor, Gary Safarik in Council District V and John Santangelo in Council District VI.
