Passing on
the Prince

AS youngsters growing more or less up, we used toMug shot think it the height of hilarity to call the local cigar store and ask, "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?" This was followed, of course by something like, "Let him out -- he's suffocating." Well Prince Albert, the real one from Monaco, was at the Kahala Hilton on a layover on his way to the Olympics in Sydney. Tom Moffatt was among those invited, but faced with the dilemma of going to a cocktail party held in the honor of the son of the late Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, or attending a dinner thrown by affable Englishman Henry Woltag, known to his mates as "The Duke of Bayswater," he opted for the latter. Why choose the Duke over a Prince? Among other things, "I didn't know what to call him," admitted Moffatt. I referred him to the Paul Simon song, "You can call me Al." Prince Albert is the head of his country's Olympic team and was a bobsledder for Monaco in the winter games ...

YOU can forget about the "June Jones for Governor" movement after Saturday's debacle at Aloha Stadium. On the bright side, traffic at the next game probably won't be as horrendous ... And what can you say about Tiger Woods that hasn't already been said? He'd have been a more attractive vice-presidential candidate than either one selected by the candidates. But then, at 24, he's too young to hold the office ...

Lose one, find another

PLAYBOY founder Hugh Hefner has been complaining publicly that one of his four girlfriends has departed the mansion to join the "Baywatch Hawaii" cast. (As Jay Leno said, he must be popping Viagra with a Pez dispenser.) But now Hef is possibly angling to get even. Playboy has let it be known to "Baywatch" babe Stacy Kamano that they'd like to see (and expose) more of her. She gained some national attention last night during the Emmy Awards telecast, getting the attention of Gary Shandling and David Spade ...

BACK in February I wrote about the jazz festival held on the grounds of the old downtown post office and commented (again!) about the signs that keep cropping up there promising a galleria in the near future. "Another year, another festival and another sign," I wrote. Now they can take it down. Without so much as a shovel digging into the dirt, plans for the $54 million galleria have been scrapped for lack of financing ...

COLLECTION agency owners Kedric and Suzie Hasha are having more than a bit of trouble collecting a tax refund of their own. They recently got a letter from the IRS office in Andover, Mass., with $1.40 postage on it. That's the foreign rate; the correct amount should have been 55 cents. Or doesn't the IRS know we've been one of these United States for 41 years now ... Auntie Pasto's in Kapahulu has won an award for being "breastfeeding friendly." But don't expect to see a smorgasbord of breasts there. Owner Ed Wary has set aside three booths with curtains, ideal for nursing moms ...

Two Jakes

WHEN Kim Jacobsen showed up at the Big City Diner to pick up an order for babyback ribs, garlic mashed potatoes and boiled soybeans he'd ordered by phone, the waitress said the order had just that moment been picked up. The two ran into the parking lot and told John Jacobson he had the wrong order. He and Kim had ordered exactly the same thing, except for the soybeans ...
