at autumn sumo
TOKYO, Sept. 7 (Kyodo) -- Yokozuna Musashimaru and ozeki Chiyotaikai both posted comfortable wins Thursday to preserve their perfect records five days into the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament.Grand champion Akebono and three more ozeki wrestlers also recorded wins at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo to remain at the heels of the front-running duo.
Defending champion Musashimaru, still seeking his first championship of 2000, handed Onigishiki a fifth straight defeat with a series of slaps at the face-off before dragging the No. 5 maegashira down to the dirt for the win.
Co-leader Chiyotaikai also showed top maegashira Tosanoumi (1-4) how to wrestle, dodging to the left at the face-off before pulling him down to the surface of the raised ring for win No. 5.
Akebono, going for back-to-back championships for the first time since 1993, only needed three mighty shoves to force out No. 2 maegashira Chiyotenzan (2-3) as the winner of the Nagoya tournament in July picked up his fourth win.
Ozeki Dejima, also 4-1, saddled sekiwake Tochiazuma with his third loss and laid his hopes of promotion to ozeki to rest after locking onto the sekiwake's arm and flinging him into the front row of seats.
Ozeki Miyabiyama (4-1) looked more than capable of registering the four more wins he needs to hold onto sumo's second highest rank, charging out komusubi Takanonami (3-2) after the former ozeki had forced him to the edge of the ring.
Sekiwake Musoyama (4-1) moved a step closer to regaining the ozeki rank he lost at the Nagoya tourney in July as he stormed out of his crouch to quickly dispose of Mongolia's Kyokutenho and hand the No.3 maegashira his fifth straight loss of the tourney.
Kyokushuzan (3-2) of Mongolia, wrestling at No. 14 maegashira, was no match for Aminishiki (4-1) as the 13th-ranked maegashira locked onto the former komusubi's belt from the rear and sent him over the straw bales from behind for the win.
American 12th-ranked maegashira Sentoryu (1-4) stumbled to a fourth defeat as No. 13 maegashira Hamanoshima lifted the St. Louis native out of the ring to improve to 3-2.
