SHOPPING FANATIC

We love high culture -- theatre, music, dance
-- but weekends are also made for shopping

A Walk in the Garden's Diane Halford
strikes a pose on hopscotch stones.

A shop that tends
to the garden

It was a character in "Steel Magnolias" who said that what separates us from other animals is our ability to accessorize.

Trivial as the statement seems, it does hold true in fashion -- and in gardening.

A well-placed cast-iron pot holding a burst of colorful impatiens, a mosaic-topped table amid the hydrangea or a wrought-iron sculpture peeking through English ivy adds interest and diversity to garden, says Diane C. Halford, owner of a tiny new store called A Walk in the Garden.

The shop on 11th Avenue in Kaimuki offers topiaries, hangings for garden walls, decorative pots, watering cans, shepherd hooks, lanterns, chimes, mini water gardens, weather vanes, candle holders, plant stands and bird houses as well as plants and fresh flowers. Prices run from $585 for the mosaic table to 69 cents for a 4-inch begonia.

Halford, who worked at as a pediatric nurse for 15 years, opened the store about six weeks ago because she thinks there are other gardeners like her who want unusual pieces to decorate their gardens.

"I had a difficult time finding items I wanted; you can't find these things at Eagle Hardware or other typical garden stores."

She finds life as a store owner "a learning experience," and queries customers about what they'd like to see. One big problem: "Every piece I put in here is something I like. I get attached them, so when somebody buys them, I have to say good-bye."

A Walk in the Garden: 11th Avenue Atrium, 1137 11th Ave. (off Waialae). Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays, closed Mondays. Call 735-5699.

Shopping Fanatic is a Thursday feature dedicated to the pursuit of shopping finds beyond the big malls.
