Sony Open purse
increased to $4 million

Prize money for next January's Sony Open in Hawaii golf tournament has been raised $1.1 million to a total of $4 million, it was announced yesterday by Anthony Guerrero Jr., president of the Friends of Hawaii Charities, the sponsor organization for the event.

The inaugural Sony Open in Hawaii had a purse of $2.6 million. This year's purse went up to $2.9 million, with winner Paul Azinger pocketing $522,000.

The winner of the Jan. 15-21, 2001, tournament will receive $720,000 from Sony Corporation, the title sponsor.

UH marketing head named

Brandon Mitchell has been hired as Director of Collegiate Marketing for the University of Hawaii Athletic Department, it was announced yesterday by Leigh Steinberg of Steinberg Moorad & Dunn.

Mitchell, formerly Assistant Director of Athletics for Marketing and Promotions at Dartmouth College, will work with Steinberg, SMD and Stephanie Pietsch, their Hawaii-based Director of Corporate Sales on UH marketing and promotional efforts.

Maui golf tourney set

The Maui County Bar Association's annual golf tournament is set for Saturday at The Dunes at Maui Lani in Kahului.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the MCBA/Arthur T. Ueoka Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a law student with strong Maui ties and compelling financial needs.

The registration fee is $90 and includes cart and green fees, a post-tournament luncheon, awards and prizes. Registration is 6:30 a.m., with the tournament at 7 a.m. For more information, call Lynn Araki at 244-6042.
