History is not about memorizing dates and names. History is about human triumphs and tragedies that are more exciting than anything Hollywood could make up, said John Richard Ziegler, a Honolulu Community College professor. 36 honored for
teaching, serviceBy Suzanne Tswei
Star-BulletinZiegler's ability to make history comes alive is one of the reasons he has been chosen to win a university teaching award. Ziegler, who has been teaching history and American studies at the community college for 25 years, is among the 36 university faculty and staff to be honored tomorrow at the Pride 2000 Convocation.
"This is really gratifying," said Ziegler, who is winning his first teaching award. "I try to make history exciting and relevant, I try to bring a fair amount of enthusiasm to the classroom."
In addition to his teaching, Ziegler also is recognized for his effort to bring a three-ton section of the Berlin Wall to the HCC campus for permanent display. He also helped establish a natural museum on campus that features a replica of the full skeleton of a stegosaurus.
Ziegler is 55 and received his master's degree in American studies at the Manoa campus. Other winners include:
