dies at 71By Rod Ohira
Star-Bulletin"He had salt water in his veins, not printer's ink," Nancy Thurston said about her husband of 40 years and eight months, who died Aug. 28 at age 71.
Lorrin F. Thurston, a Mokuleia resident who earned a Purple Heart in the Korean War as a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team, was a master mariner.
"That's the ultimate, someone who has earned all the Coast Guard licenses," Nancy Thurston said.
In the 1970s, Lorrin F. Thurston was the senior captain for SeaFlite, a Kentron International Pacific Sea Transportation interisland hydrofoil operation that shut down in January 1978 after a 31-month run.
Thurston went on to work for Boeing Marine, which manufactured jetfoils, his wife said.
"He traveled to Europe, Spain and South America, training people on how to operate the jetfoils," she said.
Thurston graduated from Punahou School in 1947 and attended Lawrenceville preparatory school in New Jersey before enlisting in the Army in 1948.
He is survived by his wife; son, Rob; daughter, Meredith, and sister, Diane Ramstead.
