Haugen heeds
country’s call

GUESS who former Bishop Estate trustee Dickie Wong spent the Labor Day weekend with at the Hilton Waikoloa? None other than his ex-wife, Mari. It's a kind of textbook divorce story, with the two remaining good friends, terrific since they have a daughter together ... After 40 years of singing Hawaiian music, Keith Haugen Mug shotisn't about to give up the genre, but he's adding a new dimension to his repertoire. Welcome to "Cordell Country." Performing as Cordell, his real middle name, Haugen plans to release his debut C&W CD on Nov. 1 on his own Island Viking label ... The game of restaurant roulette continues apace. Word is that Ben Dowling, G.M. of Sunset Grill, is moving to Waikiki to take a similar position with Nick's Fishmarket ... Meanwhile, pals Aaron Placourakis and Randy Schoch are teaming up to open a new restaurant together ...

EVERYONE is into the "Survivor" show, and those who got thrown off the island as well as the "fat naked guy" who won have been popping up on TV show after TV show. The program ran on CBS, but even rival NBC is cashing in on the popularity of the concept, hence "Green Room Survivor." That's where four performers from around the country compete to survive on the "Tonight Show." One of those showing off his skills this week is Chief Sielu of the Polynesian Cultural Center ...

Storm before the calm

ONCE it opens, Mary Suiter's Malama, an Aveda Lifestyle Salon Spa in Manoa, promises to be a sea of tranquility. But while things are bustling up there as they ready for a Sept. 12 opening, the atmosphere is anything but calm. Suiter may become one of her own best customers, because no sooner will she be open in Manoa than things will be moving along at a good pace to open the much larger Malama store in Ala Moana Center on Nov. 28. Then it'll be a bit of deep breathing room before she opens the larger still Kailua salon spa and fitness center in fall of next year ...

FOUR Seasons Maui G.M. Tom Steinhauer has been working out to get ready for the 11th annual Terry Fox Cancer Research benefit Oct. 21. It begins with a 10K run through the scenic Wailea area. I observed it one year, and Steinhauer had every intention of running the race and then greeting runners at the finish line. Reality set in at some point, and he bailed off course, cutting out about half the distance, figuring his welcoming handshake was more important than his finishing the race ...

PULITZER Prize-winning author Frank McCourt ("Angela's Ashes," " 'Tis") and his brother Malachy were big hits at last weekend's Maui Writer's Conference. Malachy's first book, "A Monk Swimming," was on the New York Times best-seller list along with brother Frank's two memoirs. Malachy has a new book out in October, "Singing My Him Song." ...

You beautiful doll

FRESH from a trip to Australia, "Millie," is being taken around town and photographed by Deborah Roitblat. Millie is a doll designed by renowned doll designer Robert Tommer and discovered on the doll chat room on eBay by Roitblat. Members of these groups pass along dolls to take photos of them in differing locales and establish a history for them. Thus far Millie has been all over Hawaii, and when Roitblat and her husband, UH cognitive psychology professor Dr. Herbert Roitblat, visit Paris next week, Millie will come along before being passed over to a new guardian ...
