Hawaii is still near the top of the nationwide list for growth in retail sales, according to a monthly survey that tallies purchases made with checks.

The value of sales by check in Hawaii rose 5.3 percent last month from August 1999, according to Houston-based TeleCheck, a check-verification company. Nationwide sales rose 3.8 percent during the same period.

Pennsylvania, with 5.4 percent growth, was the only state to edge out Hawaii, which has been at or near the top of TeleCheck's list since last Christmas' shopping season. TeleCheck counts only purchases paid by check in stores open for more than a year. Checks account for about one-third of retail spending, according to TeleCheck.
