Akebono hands
Tochiazuma 2nd loss

TOKYO, Sept. 5 (Kyodo) -- Tochiazuma's bid for ozeki may have to wait for another day after the sekiwake was shoved out of the ring in a one-sided loss to yokozuna Akebono at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday.

Akebono capped a perfect day for the yokozuna and ozeki at Ryogoku Kokugikan with his second win of the tournament while Tochizuma suffered a second loss and can ill afford to lose anymore during the remainder of the 15-day basho.

Tochizuma, needing 11-12 wins to be considered for promotion to ozeki, charged aggressively into the 230-kilogram grand champion at the face-off of the day's final bout. But there, the momentum stopped.

Akebono, winner of the Nagoya crown in July, lumbered forward and was not fooled by the sekiwake's half-hearted attempt at an arm throw at the edge of the ringing, shoving Tochiazuma into the ringside seats from behind.

Meanwhile, Musashimaru, the tournament's defending champion, made it three wins in a row with his eighth straight win over Toki (1-2), backing the over-matched No. 4 maegashira out of the ring with little problem.

Newly promoted ozeki Kaio kept pace with the unbeaten grand champion by grabbing the left arm of Hayateumi (1-2) from the outside and whipping the smaller No. 2 maegashira to the ring's surface.

Along with Musashimaru and Kaio, ozeki Dejima and Chiyotaikai, sekiwake Musoyama and No. 14 maegashira Kyokushuzan of Mongolia are also undefeated with three wins each.

Dejima rocked Takatoriki back at the initial charge and followed up quickly to push out the winless No. 4 maegashira and Chiyotaikai rattled Akinoshima with a series of thrusts that knocked the komusubi off the raised ring.

Musoyama stayed on track to regain ozeki status, fighting off the attempted throws of Oginishiki (0-3) and pushing the No. 5 maegashira over the straw ridge for a third win. The Musashigawa stable sekiwake needs to 10 wins to be reinstated.

Miyabiyama, meanwhile, in danger of losing his ozeki ranking, came out with all guns blazing, shoving Tochinonada (0-3) all over the ring before finally flinging the No. 3 maegashira to the ring's surface for a second win.

In the day's first makuuchi division bout, one-time komusubi Kyokushuzan pulled down juryo-division wrestler Jumonji (1-2) for a third straight win.

Mongolian compatriot Kyokutenho, wrestling as a No. 3 maegashira, however, continues to look for his first win of the tourney after being waltzed out by sixth-ranked Kotonowaka (2-1) after a prolonged bout.

American Sentoryu at the No. 12 maegashira position also struggles with a winless streak after getting slapped down by eighth-ranked Aminishiki (2-1).
