The national telethon hosted by Jerry Lewis raised a record $54.6 million.
In Hawaii, VIP phones set a record by raising $51,000 for MDA, said Hurtubise.
"We had incredible corporate support from the Tony Group, First Hawaiian Bank, Longs Drugs Stores and Star Market," she said. Starting Saturday evening, more than 100 volunteers participated by answering phone calls.
Musical groups such as Shakapela, Honolulu and Paiea performed at Ala Moana Centerstage in support of the telethon.
"We're deeply touched by the generosity that we saw from the Hawaii community," said Hurtubise.
MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat neuromuscular diseases through research, services, and professional and public health education. Programs are mainly funded by individual private contributors.
