S’long, long
year of transition

This has been a year of changes. Graduation parties are long over, and friends are gone. Andrew left for the Air Force Academy. The "Fruit" went on a tour of Asia before heading toward Seattle U. Mark's still annoyed at not getting into Stanford while Anna (Sacred Hearts) took pride at getting in. "I'm proud to have beaten you," she said.

Yeah, I got rejected from Stanford, too. And a few other Ivies.

Mom gave me a lecture on what I did wrong on the applications and what I did wrong this summer by not doing much at all.

There were scholarship interviews to do and rejections to receive. I took time to look over the list of scholarship recipients, and wondered what was wrong with the males. There were more female than male names on the list. I saw a few people I know, discovered who did get in to the Ivies. I was also called a "she" by the Downtown Planet as the PAAC scholarship recipient.

Mom gave me a speech about why I got scholarship rejections.

I started intern work. Tutored a fellow student in algebra. Worked on a book. Took a few computer classes but I doubt I will use knowledge of OSI layers anytime soon. I don't even like technology.

Went out for karaoke, croaking out "The Phantom of the Opera" to the musical laughter of my friends.

Mom begins work on her thesis on why I should not think about girls, and how to avoid this.

Felt lonely anyway. Asked someone for a date. Found out I got an entry in her online journal as "weirdo." Hooked up a home network and for the place I work at.

Almost bumped into Ben Cayetano while trying to get to the restroom during a luncheon because of Thai food that disagrees with me. Set up my finances and opened up savings and checking accounts. Read IRS documents regarding whether I need to file.

Mom begins her epic on how I am more lazy and shiftless after graduation than when I was in high school, a full three months ago.

Worked on another publication for the homeowner association. Went to the Honolulu Academy of Arts "Mysteries of the Nile" exhibition. Visited the store. Saw a poster that I think fits well with the liberal arts theme. The figure isn't wearing anything ...

My studies are beginning anew at Grinnell College in Iowa. Already, I can't wait for vacation to come around.

By the way, did I ever mention why I dislike technology?

Mom can now contact me via my digital phone, with free long-distance service ...
