‘Lite’ guy wins
heavy battle

SHOULD they ever need a replacement for William Shatner to play "The Great Giant Head" on the TV sitcom, "Third Rock from the Sun," we have a nominee. How about the Star-Bulletin's Charley Memminger? The "Honolulu Lite" columnist, who dabbles in screenplay writing in his off hours, won first place in the Maui Writer's Conference screenwriting contest, beating out 551 other entrants. Seriously, Charley's at the peak of his game. He was a "fryer" at the Stir-Fry of yours truly afterMug shot 30 years of three-dotting, and after my suggestion that he rename the column "Honolulu Heavy," he dropped 60 pounds. Now, after years of being runner-up in screenplay contests, he has a No. 1 trophy, and may soon be hearing the siren song of Hollywood calling to his svelter frame ... Someone who's already left is business writer Peter Wagner, who replaces China Daily-bound Lucy Jokiel (an award-winning business writer herself) as editor of Island Business magazine. Peter had been writing for 19 years for the paper, and hated to have to leave in the midst of its most turbulent time in history when, one hopes, it changes hands and stays in business ...

WHEN Gordon Piianaia saw a "Mufi for Mayor" sign, it dawned upon him it would appeal more to the locals if it read "Mufi Fomeia." ... Be forewarned: Before leaving for his second home in Sarasota, Fla., onetime Frank Fasi supporter Guido Salmaggi promised Jeremy Harris that if he's re-elected, the ageless singer would return to perform the National Anthem at the Harris swearing in ...

El Duque Perfecto

THE 2000 World Cliff Diving Championships were held at Kahekili's Leaps on Lanai, and thrilling both the crowds and judges was Orlando Duque, one of the cliff drivers from Waimea Falls Park. His amazing scorecard showed perfect 10s from each of the seven judges on his winning 80-foot dive with a quadruple double-back somersault. The event will be televised on the USA Network later this month. Incidentally, live narration of the event was from the aptly named cliff diving guru of Waimea Falls Park, Art Rivers ...

LOOKS like D.K. Kodama doesn't spend all his time in the kitchen of his Sansei Seafood. He found his way to the golf course and won buddy Roy Yamaguchi's charity golf tourney, the prize being an all-expense trip for two to Carmel, Calif. While Kodama and wife Lori fully intend to enjoy their stay at Spanish Bay and D.K.'s first round ever at Pebble Beach, they're also looking forward to dining at Roy's while there. The restaurateur's S.F. eatery has just opened at Second and Mission ...

IF you called it a whirlwind visit, you wouldn't be far off. Chef James McDonald of Lahaina's Pacific'O and I'o restaurants, visited Taiwan where he promoted isle cuisine at the five-star Yoho Resort. Always on the move, he arrived in a typhoon and a week later left in another ...

The Henry Regatta

DUE back in Hawaii today is singer Henry Kapono, fresh from his SRO performance at Aloha Station, a restaurant/bar with a Hawaiian motif, in Toyko's Roppingi district. Fans started lining up two hours before showtime despite the fact it was the hottest day of the year -- 100 degrees! That helped boost beer sales, you can bet, and Kapono and wife Lezlee also sold out a case of advance copies of his new CD, "Evolution of Poi." Pictures should soon be available, if not up already, on the singer's web site: www.henrykapono.com ...
