Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes.
in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times,
however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things
change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

Many people are celebrating the 116th Labor Day today
by not working, thanks to the work of labor unions.
Congress made it an official national holiday in 1894.
Although most of the world celebrates Labor Day on
May 1, it is set for the first Monday in September in the
United States and Canada. In 1981, local labor leaders
gathered for a holiday rally at the Kapiolani Park
Bandstand. Above, from left: Charles Campbell,

Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO); Al
Hamai of the American Federation of State, County
and Municipal Employees; Henry Epstein of the
Hawaii AFL-CIO; and then-former and now
once-again U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink. PATCO
was in the news a lot that year, first for going
on strike, then after President Reagan fired
striking members.

In 1983, "We will be heard" was the theme of the
