Cayetano OKs
bill postponing
medical-record
privacy law

Gov. Ben Cayetano has given his OK to a bill approved by the Legislature during a special two-day session.

The bill delays the start of a new law designed to protect the privacy of health-care records. Medical industry representatives and others in the insurance and law insurance professions who handle medical records had complained that the bill made it too difficult for legitimate people to use medical records.

Cayetano originally said the details could be worked out next year, but he agreed with legislators who wanted the implementation halted and signed the legislation.

HEMP DAY: Tomorrow is Industrial Hemp Day.

Rep. Cynthia Thielen, one of the Legislature's strongest proponents of using hemp for industrial uses, says the Wahiawa industrial-hemp research project will have a special ceremony featuring David West, lead scientist for the Hawaii hemp research project, and Rep. Calvin Say, speaker of the house.

West is expected to discuss the various types of hemp that can be legally grown under the research project.

"Two months from planting to harvest means Hawaii is an attractive breeding and production site for industrial hemp," he said.

OFFICIAL TRAVEL: Panda Travel received a two-year contract to provide interisland travel for state and county officials.

The award was made on a competitive bid basis between Hawaiian and Aloha airlines.

Cost of a one-way ticket for state and county travel will be $47.75.

The state procurement office handled the contract details.
