Skin-cancer panel
gives safe-sun tips

"Practice Safe Sun" will be the topic of a panel discussion from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty House Ala Moana's Special Events Room.

In addition to the 45-minute discussion, there will be a 15-minute question-and-answer period and an hour of pre-cancer screening and skin analysis with Drs. Gregory Herbich and Wayne Fujita.

Panelists will include dermatologists Milton Ackerman and Herbich, ophthalmologist Timothy McDevitt, esthetician Nancy Wilder, moderator Lynn Murakami-Akatsuka and a skin cancer survivor.

The cost is $5, with the ticket price redeemable toward a cosmetic purchase the day of the seminar. Light refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded.

Tickets are available from the Liberty House Ala Moana cashier on the fourth floor, or they may be charged by phone through the store's Personal Shopping Service, 945-8049.

The event is sponsored by Liberty House, the Skin Cancer Coalition and American Cancer Society.

Meetings scheduled
on Honouliuli plan

The Nature Conservancy wants community input on a proposed plan to manage natural and cultural resources for the Honouliuli Preserve in the Waianae Mountains.

The conservancy will hold a series of public meetings to gather input on their proposed five-year plan Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The plan, in addition to managing natural and cultural resources, will guide community outreach and educational efforts through 2005.

A Waianae Coast meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Waianae Public Library.

A Kunia/Village Park/ Waipahu meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at Kaleiopuu Elementary Cafeteria.

An Ewa/ Makakilo meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, at Campbell Estate Building, Laulima Room.

Police nab six at isle sobriety checkpoints

Police arrested six men last night on suspicion of drunken driving.

The arrests included four Oahu residents, a Sacramento man and a sailor stationed on the USS Chosin, according to arrest records.

Five of the suspects were 27 years old or younger.

Police posted sobriety checkpoints around the island because of the holiday weekend.

Woman wins car after holding on for 61 hours

Hand it to Kara Edwards of Waimanalo for winning a 2001 Kia Rio today on a local radio contest.

Edwards was the last person among 25 contestants with her hand still touching the car.

She had her hand on the car for 61 hours and 41 minutes.

The Krater 96 Kia for Keeps contest started on Friday at 4 p.m., and Edwards kept her hand on the car until 5:41 this morning.

Second place went to Joelle Acoba of Honolulu who won a neighbor island vacation.

Discover Center shuts for repairs till Sept. 12

The Hawaii Children's Discover Center will be closed for maintenance from tomorrow through Sept. 11.

The center will open at 9 a.m. on Sept. 12.

Nimitz, H-3 lanes close for resurfacing, repair

Resurfacing work has begun on Nimitz Highway from Rodgers Boulevard to Ahua Street.

There will be lane closures in both directions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Work also includes repairing and replacing wheelchair ramps, replacing traffic signal wires and installing conduits and electrical pull boxes.

Separately, one lane of H-3 Freeway will shut down tomorrow.

The right lane before the Halawa-bound Hospital Rock Tunnel will close from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for adjusting traffic cameras.

Lawyer sets up awards for students, attorneys

A Honolulu attorney has established the Edmunds Awards for Civility and Vigorous Advocacy to recognize University of Hawaii law students and practicing attorneys.

Attorney John Edmunds, a longtime supporter of the UH law school, has made a six-year pledge to fund these awards and support the student moot court through the UH Foundation.

Two awards will be given out annually, one to a full-time law student and the other to a practicing attorney.

"I hope that by establishing these awards, members of the legal community and the general public will recognize that tough, aggressive advocacy and civility are not mutually exclusive," Edmunds said.

Dillingham field closes briefly for military use

Dillingham Airfield will be closed Wednesday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. and from noon Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday for military air operations.

Extensive helicopter operations will be conducted at the airfield.

Space north and south of the runway will be used for military parking.

Arson blamed in one fire; 6 lose home in another

Arson is suspected in last night's fire at the A.Y. Wong office building that caused $65,000 damage.

The blaze started before 8 p.m. in a storage room on the second floor of the four-story S. King Street building, according to an arson investigator's report.

No suspects have been arrested and no injuries were reported.

Yesterday morning, fire swept through and destroyed a Windward home, leaving six people homeless.

The fire destroyed a two-bedroom Waiahole Valley Road home and a detached studio apartment, fire officials said. Four family members were asleep in the house and two in the studio, but all escaped without injury.

Fire crews controlled the blaze in a half-hour and spent 3 1/2 hours extinguishing it. Investigators estimated $90,000 in damage. A cause has not been determined.

Police arrest man, 27, in suspected beating

Police arrested a 27-year-old man yesterday for allegedly beating a woman after losing a bet on a football game.

The woman said the man had been drinking at his apartment on Young Street and lost a bet on a football game before the attack at 7:10 p.m., police said.

He reportedly punched her several times in the face and kicked her when she fell. She suffered a broken nose and a possible fractured eye socket, police said. She was able to flee the apartment.

He was booked for second-degree assault, which is a felony.

Boy, 15, stabbed while trying to rob 17-year-old

A 15-year-old boy was stabbed yesterday after he attempted to rob another teen-age boy of a necklace at a bus stop in Kalihi.

The boy was stabbed while trying to steal a 17-year-old's necklace at the 2233 N. School St. bus stop at about 4 p.m., police said.

The younger boy, who faces robbery charges, was taken to an area hospital with a stab wound to his back, police said. He was in stable condition. The older boy was arrested for assault.
