Star-BulletinLabor Day honors working people and that includes mostly all of us. To mark the holiday, we offer glimpses of some island people doing their jobs as they do throughout the year. Like all of us, they work hard for their money.
The water's fine
Rhonda Mall, 30
Diver, fish feeder, Oceanarium Restaurant
Two years on the job, which also involves cleaning the 280,000-gallon tank, gathering fish, preparing the fish food and maintaining scuba gear
"I love working with animals and this keeps me relaxed. And it's fun, except in the winter when the air-conditioning gets cold. Sometimes the sting rays get excited and sometimes they bite."
Exactly
Aurora Tadiarca, 59
Egg packer and inspector, Ka Lei eggs, Associated Producers Corp.
25 years on the job. Since coming from the Philippines, it is the only job she's had. She holds a bachelor of science degree in agriculture and home economics from Mountain National Agriculture College in La Trinidad Begued.
"I love my job too much to dislike anything." Likes her eggs scrambled.
Spreading aloha
Cathy Lum Lung, 61, (with visitor Scott Miller from St. Louis, Mo.)
Lei greeter, Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays
11 years, 7 months and 2 days on the job
"I try to make (visitors) feel welcome. They're so happy that someone is waiting to greet them. The lei is the first thing they experience when they come here. I tell them the meaning of aloha -- that aloha doesn't come from the mouth, it comes from the heart."
Crisping critters
Shawn Murray, 43
Owner, operator, Aloha Termite & Pest Control
1-year-old business; 25 years in pest control. Started business last year with four people (including himself) and three trucks. Today, employs 20 and has 11 vehicles and has done more than $1 million in business.
"In one house we did, it was like walking on cornflakes. There were so many dead cockroaches and 200 to 300 dead mice. The best thing about this work is you get to help people and then they sleep better at night."
Cool like that
Rose and Ben Aranita, both 78
Ice cream vendors
15 years, since they retired
"We like to see people, talk to the young children," Ben said. "I tell them give me a riddle and if I cannot answer them, I give them free ice cream. I write down the riddle so I can remember they told me that one before."
