Catholics to run
72-unit low-income
apartment

Star-Bulletin staff

A Catholic charitable organization was to celebrate its new role as landlord today with the dedication of a Pearl City apartment complex as low-income housing.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, organized as the SVdP Social Services Housing Corp., became owner of the 72-unit Manana Gardens Apartments at 929 Luehu St. earlier this year with the help of the state Community Development and Housing Corp. and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Society spokesman Bill Westphalen said the organization had the help of numerous business and professional people in putting together the purchasing partnership, which undertook a $5 million mortgage. The nonprofit organization qualified for tax credit and other tax benefits.

The units are now rented to people whose income is between 50 and 60 percent of the Hawaii median income. The tenants qualify for subsidies of up to $215 of the $700 rent.

Catholic Bishop Francis DeLorenzo was to preside at the 10 a.m. dedication today at the apartment complex. The complex was dedicated to the Rev. Mark Consalvi, who was instrumental in bringing the charitable organization to Hawaii 35 years ago, Westphalen said.

The group has about 40 members who usually dispense food, rent and utility money to needy people using donations made through Catholic parishes.

Westphalen said the group will use profits from the apartment project to help support its programs.
