CityExpress! Route B begins,
linking Kalihi to Waikiki

CityExpress! Route B service began early today.

Mayor Jeremy Harris, City Council members and community leaders marked it with small celebrations along the route at Kapalama Elementary School, Chinatown, Ward Avenue and Kaiulani Avenue.

The new high-capacity express bus service links neighborhoods and business centers between Kalihi and Waikiki.

"Route B takes you where you want to go," Harris said. "It offers a faster, more convenient ride through town to Waikiki. We expect the service to be especially popular with people who work in Waikiki, others going to business, commercial or government centers and our visitors."

Route B could eventually carry as many as 10,000 people daily. More than 300,000 people live along this route and new bus riders are expected to be attracted to it.

Route B service runs from 4:54 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Buses run every 15 minutes along a route that passes 24 key stops along School Street, Liliha Street, King Street, Kalakaua Avenue, Kuhio Avenue and Beretania Street.

The last bus from Waikiki (Monsarrat) leaves at 9:59 p.m. and arrives at the Kalihi Transit Center at 10:49 p.m.

The catalyst for this new service came out of community input at city Trans2K and Community Vision Team meetings.

State delivering water to Waiawa inmates

A water problem that showed up Saturday at Waiawa Correctional Facility has led the state to transport water to the site.

"We think that it's a leak," said Marian Tsuji, deputy director, Department of Public Safety. "We've brought in water. We've got water buffaloes up at the facility to supplement our regular water," she said.

Efforts continue to find the leak, and the supplementary water has kept inmates supplied, she said. "Everybody's gotten showers."

Workshop to teach seniors awareness
of telemarketing and mail scams

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie will hold a workshop tomorrow to alert senior citizens to the dangers of mail and telemarketing scams.

FBI, Postal Service and Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs representatives will take part in the 9:30 a.m. gathering at the Moiliili Senior Citizens Center, at 2353 S. King St. .

"Telemarketing and mail fraud robs Americans of an estimated $40 billion a year," Abercrombie said. "All too frequently the victims are senior citizens. The purpose of this workshop is to share information so seniors can recognize mail and telemarketing fraud when they confront it and (learn) how to report it, so we can put a stop to it."

The workshop is one in a series of outreach events to share information on widespread mail and telemarketing fraud. Abercrombie also sponsored legislation to strengthen federal efforts to fight mail and telemarketing fraud.

The family of Carlos V. Carrillo, who disappeared after an altercation with a bouncer at the Evolution Waikiki nightclub last month, is asking for the public's help.

Carrillo's mother and grandmother, from the mainland, planned to pass out flyers in Waikiki today with a photo and a message that reads: "Please listen to your heart and volunteer any information you may have on Carlos' whereabouts."

Carrillo has not been heard from or seen since the early morning of July 4.

"I'm not going to stop looking for him until I find him," said Carrillo's mother, Maya.

"I'm here to put closure to his whereabouts, whether he's alive, which I hope to God he is."

Police have made no arrests in the puzzling missing persons case and are searching for more clues.

Carrillo is described as Mexican-American, 5 feet 10, 180 pounds with a medium build and a fair complexion. He has brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black slacks and white Puma athletic shoes.
