Northwood upsets BYUH

Star-Bulletin staff

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team fell one spot in the NCAA Division II poll yesterday.

Last night, the No. 2-ranked Seasiders fell even harder. The defending national champions lost to No. 20 Northwood of Michigan, 14-16, 15-13, 15-8, 15-1, at the Cannon Activities Center.

It was the first home loss for BYUH in 62 matches going back to 1994, when Cal State-Bakersfield beat them at Laie. It was also the first time since 1989 that the Seasiders dropped their season opener; that year, they lost to Division I Washington State.

BYUH (0-1) next competes in the Hawaiian Style Classic, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo, beginning tomorrow.

Northwood (1-1) also is in the Classic, which runs through Saturday at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

HPU takes over as No. 1

Hawaii Pacific replaced Brigham Young-Hawaii as the top-ranked team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll released yesterday.

The Sea Warriors (1-0) received just six first-place votes but amassed 603 points. BYU-Hawaii received the remaining 19 first-place votes but had nine fewer points than HPU.

Vulcans win opener

Sara Pilgreen had a match-high 13 kills to lead the University of Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team to a 15-9, 15-5, 18-16 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills last night at the UHH Gym.

Cheriesse Shiroma added five blocks in the season-opening victory for the Vulcans. Veronica Diaz had 13 kills for the visiting Toros (1-2).

Kop earns amateur spot

Wendell Kop shot a 1-over par 73 yesterday at the Honolulu Country Club to win Hawaii's lone berth in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. Finishing three strokes back for the first alternate's spot was David Ishikawa

The U.S. Senior Amateur Championship will be played at the Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club, Sept. 23-28. The event is open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by Sept. 23, and have a USGA handicap index not exceeding 7.4.

Tom perfect in 'Football Fever' contest

It was the perfect start to the Star-Bulletin's Football Fever Contest.

Violet Tom, a cashier at Wailana Coffee House for 30 years, went 10-0 on last week's opening ballot of the season.

"I picked them by random,'' said Tom, an avid football and baseball fan. "But 10-0? I'm very surprised.''

Tom has been to a World Series but would like to get to a Super Bowl some day. The weekly prize of $500 could be a start.

Panelist Dan Meisenzahl from KITV also went 10-0.
