QUESTION: What ever happened to the $45 million construction project that began in late 1998 to expand and upgrade Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii? Hamilton Library
will be completed
in OctoberANSWER: Construction of a new building for Hamilton Library is on schedule, according to Jean Ehrhorn, interim university librarian. The six-story addition is expected to be completed in late October and open for use next January.
Librarians will move books and services into the new building after it opens. Half of the older Hamilton Library will then be closed for renovations.
Ehrhorn said services will not be disrupted during renovations, except in the summer of 2001, when asbestos removal and other projects will limit access and services. Only the main floor of the addition will be open, and reference assistance will be available.Books will be paged upon request, but parts of the collections may be inaccessible.
After all the work is complete, the library will have an extra 81,000 square feet and upgraded facilities. Improvements will include a new air-conditioning system, which is vital to staving off mold and mildew that can damage the rare books, historical documents and other papers in the university's archival and heritage collections.
