Hawaii Kai archery
range, skate park
win approval

A single-line archery range at the Koko Head Shooting Complex has won the conceptual approval of Bill Balfour, city parks director.

That's what Jerry Hucks, archer and coach, told the Parks and Recreation Committee of the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board last night at Hahaione Elementary School.

But the Koko Head Archery Club has to be assured that safety is guaranteed, Hucks said.

Also, the range must get certification of the National Field Archery Association and final approval from the city, he said. Certification is needed to attain proper insurance coverage, Hucks said.

The committee also got updates on a proposed in-line hockey skating rink and separate skate park for skateboarding at Koko Head District Park.

Neighborhood Board member Lisa Carter said several designers are working on plans for skate parks in other parts of Oahu, but no design plans are in place yet for Koko Head District Park.

One acre would be the minimum needed, and 1 acres would be preferred for a skate park at Koko Head, she said.

A good skate park might cost more than $400,000, she said. Carter showed a letter in which Mayor Jeremy Harris said the Koko Head skate park would be given top priority and would probably be in operation by the end of 2001.

The Harris letter said the city has completed an in-line hockey rink in Mililani and has skate parks in advanced planning stages at five locations: Hono-lulu, Kailua, Haleiwa, Sunset Beach and Mililani.

The committee decided to seek another meeting on the Koko Head District Park Master Plan, in light of changed priorities that give the skate park and in-line hockey rink greater urgency.
