Star-BulletinHawaii County was listed 24th with 82,993 Asians and Pacific Islanders, followed by Maui County at 28th with 72,131. Kauai County ranked 50th of 1,532 counties, with a population of 36,137.
Maui reported the highest growth rate among Asians and Pacific Islanders from 1990-1999, climbing 22.7 percent, followed by Hawaii County at 18.5 percent and Kauai County at 10.7 percent. Honolulu reported the smallest rise, increasing only 5.3 percent.
Overall, the Census Bureau estimated Hawaii's population at 1.1 million, with Asians and Pacific Islanders accounting for 753,691. Caucasians accounted for 391,489.

The majority of Asians and Pacific Islanders live in California. Orange County is listed as third, behind Los Angeles and Honolulu, with Santa Clara fourth, San Diego sixth, Alameda seventh and San Francisco eighth.
Queens County in New York was ranked fifth, Cook County in Illinois ninth and Harris County in Texas tenth.
The Census Bureau also reported that the number of Asians and Pacific Islanders voting in congressional elections increased 366,000 between 1994 and 1998 to 1.4 million voters.
