World Gym soon
will rise from ashes

Question: I am a current member of World Gym, which suffered a major fire recently. I am unable to contact them and they have made no effort to contact me via phone or letter. I am unable to perform any exercise at home since I used their exercise equipment exclusively. Will my money be refunded if I sign up with another company? They do not have any other locations and I do not anticipate them reopening anytime soon. Can they legally enforce the contract I signed with them?

It would be a really great customer service if they took out an ad advising members of the status of their operation. In the meantime, I'm left in the dark, getting more out of shape and piling on the pounds due to the lack of exercise. Help!

Answer: When we called World Gym Honolulu's telephone number last week, all we got were busy signals. This week, we found it had been disconnected.

But we finally got some information from World Gym International, based in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The Honolulu gym was a franchise.

A World Gym spokeswoman said the local operator, Shane Morioka, is planning to reopen within the next three to six months. However, if any member would like a refund, write to Morioka at 670 Auahi St., Suite 1, Honolulu 96813.

No telephone number was available.

Q: What day/month back in 1993 did the Base Closure and Realignment Commission make its official announcement regarding the closure of Barbers Point Naval Air Station?

A: It was on June 26, 1993, that the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close Barbers Point.

The land was returned to the state last year and is now known as Kalaeloa.

Q: Can you please provide a complete address where I can send a donation to help finance the raising of the sunken nuclear submarine, Kursk?

A: The Associated Press' Moscow Bureau provided us with two leads, although you might have to specify what you want your donation used for:

Bullet The Podlodka Kursk fund, managed in the United States by the Public Health Research Institute. Checks can be sent to Podlodka Kursk, c/o PHRI, 455 First Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016.

Bullet The Russian volunteer group Mother's Right, which investigates military disasters and donates to military families. You can send donations via bank transfer to Pravo Materi, Republic National Bank of New York, New York, Account 608-205-524. Specify the donation is for the Kursk.

Unwanted mail

Here is a suggestion for people irritated by the volume of unwanted greeting cards, calendars, etc., from charitable and other organizations. I toss out the labels I don't want, but put aside the cards, note pads, inspirational booklets, recipes, etc. Then I take them to my church's annual rummage sale and put them into a "free" basket. By the end of the day, the basket is always empty. -- Evelyn Shepard

Auwe

To the man in a blue van who stole our donations to Big Brothers and Big Sisters on Aug. 5 in the Makiki/Tantalus area. He could have done it before -- how did he know when to come? Please tell your readers to beware of this person. Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Cerebral Palsy vans have logos. I learned about this too late. -- A.M.
