NFL Hawaii

Hawaii’s Carter, White,
Tuipala cut

Staff and wire reports

Three players with Hawaii ties were released yesterday as National Football League teams made their final roster cuts before the start of the regular season.

That leaves an even dozen who either played, lived or were born here to start the NFL regular season this weekend.

The San Francisco 49ers let go former Farrington High and University of California fullback Josh White and former University of Hawaii receiver Dwight Carter.

Honolulu-born linebacker Joe Tuipala (San Diego State) was waived by the New Orleans Saints.

"It's not over," said White, realizing that if he clears waivers the 49ers might place him on their practice squad.

"One door closes, another one opens. I would consider all opportunities."

White said that includes the new XFL and the CFL.

"But I played in five NFL exhibition games, so teams know I can play," said White. "This is a business. This is a numbers game. They can't keep everybody right now. But (running backs) coach (Tom) Rathman told me to stay in shape because if someone gets hurt, I'd be the first person called."

White, who roomed with Carter in training camp, said he thinks the former UH star would also consider playing in the XFL if he doesn't catch on in the NFL.

The players with Hawaii ties who survived the cuts are: Olin Kreutz, center, Chicago Bears; Ma'a Tanuvasa, defensive tackle, Denver Broncos; Jason Elam, kicker, Denver Broncos; Chris Naeole, guard, New Orleans Saints; Itula Mili, tight end, Seattle Seahawks; Adrian Murrell, running back, Washington Redskins; Jeff Ulbrich, linebacker, San Francisco 49ers; Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala, running back, Pittsburgh Steelers; Kimo vonOelhoffen, defensive tackle, Pittsburgh Steelers; Adrian Klemm (injured), offensive tackle, New England Patriots; Kaulana Noa (injured), offensive tackle, St. Louis Rams; and Sale Isaia, Jr., defensive tackle, Oakland Raiders.
