Wong, Heidger seeded
7th for Olympics

Hawaii's Kevin Wong and partner Rob Heidger of California are seeded seventh for the men's beach volleyball preliminary phase at the upcoming Sydney Olympics.

Wong and Heidger will play their first match against Canada's Jody Holden and Conrad Leinemann.

Garcia, Abubo third

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia finished third today at the Hossegor Rip Curl Pro surfing meet, losing to eventual winner C.J. Hobgood of the U.S. in the semifinals.

Eliminated in the semifinals were Hawaii's Ross Williams and Kalani Robb. Hobgood went on to defeat Australia's Luke Egan.

Two-time world champion Layne Beachley of Australia won the women's title against fellow Australian Serena Brooke.

Hawaii's Megan Abubo finished an equal third along with Brazil's Tita Tavares at the contest in Hossegor, France.

HPU spikes Northwood

The Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball team, second in the NCAA Division II rankings, opened its season with a 13-15, 15-5, 15-9, 15-4 victory over No. 20 Northwood (Mich.) yesterday at the St. Andrew's Priory Gym.

The Sea Warriors blew a 13-9 lead in dropping the first game, but were in command the rest of the way.

Newcomers Roberta Robert and Susy Garbelotti made impressive debuts for HPU, Robert with a match-high 21 kills and Garbelotti with 13 kills, seven blocks and 18 digs. Debbie Sant'Anna added 14 kills and 19 digs and All-American setter Nia Tuitele had 58 assists.

Northwood was paced by Romana Moravkova with 15 kills.

Soccer setback for HPU

Two goals by sophomore Nichole Sauvageau led Seattle to a 3-1 Pac-West women's soccer victory over visiting Hawaii Pacific yesterday.

Jannicke Snildal scored the HPU goal, heading a 35-yard cross from Tracie Ifuku into the net.

Hawaiian Style volleyball

Hawaii's four small-college women's volleyball teams will be joined by California, Texas and Michigan teams in the seventh annual Hawaiian Style Classic Thursday-Saturday at Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, Texas A&M-Commerce and Northwood (Mich.) will tangle with Hawaii Pacific, BYU-Hawaii, Chaminade and host Hawaii-Hilo in the round-robin tourney.

Each team will play twice on opening day, with matches on two courts starting at 1:30 p.m. Daily tickets cost $5 (adults) and $2 (students and senior citizens).

Skippy 32-mile paddle

The 14th annual Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole Men's International Outrigger Canoe Race will finish at the new Ko Olina Marina.

On Sunday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m., between 50 to 60 nine-man crews will start the 32-mile race from Maunalua Bay in East Oahu to Ko Olina Resort on the Leeward coast.

The entry fee is $150 per crew.

Each crew is required to have a safety escort boat.

Warriors to hold tryouts

Player tryouts for the Hawaiian Warriors semipro men's football team will be held tomorrow and Thursday at 7 p.m. at Pacheco Park in Pearl City.

Men 18 years old and up who have played high school, college pro or semipro football are invited. Players should bring shoes (for grass), T-shirts and shorts.

Toyota sponsors race

Toyota has become the title sponsor for the inaugural Aloha Nationals drag race on Saturday, Sept. 2 at Hawaii Raceway Park.

This will be the first nationally sanctioned event held at the raceway in over 30 years.

The IDRC (Import Drag Racing Circuit) sanctioned event will feature the fastest imports from around the world. The Oahu event is the eighth stop on the 10-stop $1,000,000 national tour.

Gates open at 1 p.m., followed by racing at 2 p.m. The raceway is located in Campbell Industrial Park.
