gets $10,000 grant

Star-Bulletin staff

Hospice Hawaii has received $10,000 from the Fred Baldwin Memorial foundation to help fund the first year of Hospice Hawaii Molokai.

The outreach program allows terminally ill Molokai residents and families to remain at home instead of going to Honolulu for hospice care.

Molokai residents previously had no hospice service or other comprehensive end-of-life programs.

The outreach program is supported by Molokai General Hospital and other Molokai health care agencies, which are working with Hospice Hawaii to provide hospice care and services.

Hospice Hawaii also has received $10,000 from the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation for its Children's Bereavement Program, designed specifically to help children deal with loss and grief.

In other recent awards, Hospice Hawaii received:

Bullet $5,000 from the Atherton Family Foundation to provide administrative support to Hospice of Kona and North Hawaii Hospice.

The programs last year provided hospice care and services to about 80 terminally ill patients and families in the Big Island rural areas.

Bullet $2,500 from Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America to help Hospice Hawaii with general operating expenses.

Hospice Hawaii was established in 1979.

It provides care for terminally ill people and support services for families, caregivers and loved ones for up to one year after a patient's death.
