It's about time
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

This is a view today of the H-1 Freeway looking
Ewa from the Koko Head Avenue bridge.

Star-Bulletin
This was the scene 16 years ago on the H-1 Freeway, near Koko
Head Avenue, looking Ewa, when workers began replacing mock
orange hedges with metal guard rails and concrete barriers for
better safety. Now, the state Department of Transportation is
closing westbound lanes of the H-1, between the Waialae
Avenue and Punchbowl Street on-ramps, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Sundays through Thursdays for the next few weeks for
resurfacing. The stretch of the H-1 between Kahala and
downtown Honolulu was built in the 1950s and
hasn't been upgraded in 15 years.

The eastbound on-ramp from Kapiolani Boulevard (Kaimuki
High School is unseen to the right) was just undergoing
construction in August 1983.
