A father and his three children were in Queen's Medical Center today after a sports utility vehicle plowed into a group of people waiting at a Halawa bus stop.

The impact killed the children's 38-year-old mother. The father, 40, and the son,11, were taken to Queen's in critical condition. The boy's condition has been upgraded to fair, and his father, to guarded. The girls, 13 and 9, are in stable condition at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

Police say the family of Japanese tourists was at a bus stop on Kamehameha Highway near Salt Lake Boulevard Saturday afternoon when a Chevy Blazer cut across the highway's median and four lanes of traffic. It struck a vacant bus stop before it hit the stop where the family, two visitors from Germany and a couple from New Jersey were waiting.

An interpreter is staying with the family while they await arrival of relatives from Japan.

A representative of the Consulate General of Japan said it has been supporting the family by making sure passports are issued to those in Japan, and it will arrange hospital visits and interviews with police once they arrive.

The German couple were treated and discharged from the Queen's emergency room, and the couple from New Jersey escaped injury.

The driver, a 68-year-old Nanakuli man, was also taken to Queen's, where he is in fair condition.

Police are investigating what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle.
