Science academy marks
75th anniversary

The Hawaiian Academy of Science will celebrate its 75th anniversary at an annual dinner meeting honoring past presidents on Sept. 13.

Herman Aizawa, retiring academy president, will give the keynote address, "Music and Science," at the 5:45 p.m. event. It will be at the Treetops Restaurant, Paradise Park.

Frederick C. Newcombe was the academy's first president. Other past presidents include such noted scientists as Arthur L. Dean, Harold L. Lyon, Charles H. Edmonson, Peter H. Buck and Harold St. John.

Buildings at the University of Hawaii-Manoa and Lyon Arboretum are named for some of the scientists.

Past presidents expected to attend the celebration include: E. Allison Kay, Hampton Carson, David Crowell, S. Arthur Reed, Donald Char, Walter Steiger, Doak Cox, James Brewbaker, Carol Hopper, Lorenz Magaard, Alexander Malahoff, Toufiq Siddiqi, Charles Lamoureux, Patricia Cooper, Fred MacKenzie, Jane Tribble and Karl Minke.

Michael Garcia, UH-Manoa geology-geophysics professor, is the new academy president.

The private, nonprofit Hawaiian Academy of Science was founded to promote scientific research and education in Hawaii and the Pacific Region.

It has sponsored the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair since 1958 and the Pacific Symposium for Science and Sustainability since 1975. The symposium was formerly known as the Marine Science Symposium, then the Pacific High School Science Symposium.

Academy members and supporters are invited to the buffet dinner. The cost is $18 per person. For more information or to make a reservation, call the academy's educational programs office at 956-7930.
