Windward voters can
meet their candidates for
public office this week

The Kaneohe Business Group is giving Windward voters two chances this week to meet their candidates for public office.

Tomorrow at 7 p.m., the candidates for House and Senate from Kailua to Laie, Senate District 24 and House Districts 46, 47, 48 and 50, will hold a forum at Windward Community College, Hale Alakai Building.

On Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., candidates for mayor will attend a forum at Pohai Nani Good Samarita Kauhale, 45-090 Namoku, also sponsored by the Kaneohe Business Group.

WHERE TO VOTE:

So you are registered and ready to vote, but not sure exactly where to go. If that's your problem, the state and counties have joined forces to put up a special Internet site to direct you to the proper polling place. Go to http://www3.co.honolulu.hi.us/vote.

All a registered voter has to do is enter their street name and it will return the proper polling place, according to Genny Wong, City Clerk, said.

The city's Department of Information Technology helped with programming the Web site, she said.

"Voters are still required to be properly registered to vote," she said.

Registration for the primary election, to be held Sept. 23, closed Thursday, but those 18 and older can still register to vote in the general election.

PALAKA POWER:

The keeper of the palaka torch has been passed in the state Senate.

Retiring Sen. Joe Tanaka (D, Kahului) has passed on his trademark palaka shirts and ties to Sen. Cal Kawamoto (D, Waipahu), who shares his concept of palaka, which they call putting local products and businesses first.

"I accept the duty of modeling the concept of palaka," Kawamoto said on the Senate floor last Friday.

Shortly after, Sen. Sam Slom (R, Hawaii Kai) stated he will miss Tanaka, too.

"And I do want to say he is very ecumenical and very bipartisan. He did offer to me his collection of boxer shorts; I had to decline but I want to thank him," Slom joked.
