Returning to Aloha Stadium last night for the first time since leading St. Louis School to the state championship brought back fond memories for Timmy Chang.

The University of Hawaii quarterback learned Wednesday that he is one of the three finalists for the starting job against Portland State on Sept. 9.

He'd like nothing better than to beat out upperclassmen Mike Harrison and Nick Rolovich to win the job, and make even better memories at Aloha Stadium than he did during his Crusader years.

"Aloha Stadium still looks the same after all these years," Chang said.

"It feels good, knowing the field and playing here the majority of my games in high school.

"I know the turf helps the receivers and the defensive backs because there's a lot more speed out there. It's an advantage because I'm used to playing here.

"I find being one of the three a real accomplishment. I didn't think I would get this far, this fast. I'm just trying my best, trying to throw harder and hopefully something good will come from this."

Not that Harrison and Rolovich are ready to hand off the job just yet. Both were pumped up to be in the house head coach June Jones helped rebuild last year.

"What I noticed is you get a little excited out here," Harrison said. "The receivers are a little faster, everything speeds up.

"At the beginning, I was overthrowing the balls because of the little extra Adrenaline. It's nice being out here because it feels like game time."

Rolovich echoed those sentiments.

"You just have to work hard on each play," Rolovich said. "You get more coaching now that there's only three guys going. You make more mistakes because you get more plays. I don't really see it as more pressure. It's just good to be one of the three."
