Another honor for
BYUH’s Gaspar

Petra Gaspar, Brigham Young-Hawaii's All-American tennis player, has been named to the Rolex Collegiate All-Star Team for the second year in a row.

Gaspar, the No. 1 singles player in the final NCAA Division II rankings, will be honored today in a ceremony at New York. The event is held in conjunction with the U.S. Open and hosted by Tennis Magazine and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Hawaii surfers advance

Defending women's champion Rochelle Ballard eliminated fellow Hawaii surfer Keala Kennelly in yesterday's second round of the Hossegor (France) Rip Curl Pro.

Megan Abubo of Hawaii won her opening heat Wednesday to move to the third round.

Meanwhile, Hawaii's Shawn Sutton failed to make it through the second round of the men's division yesterday.

Six other Hawaii surfers -- Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia, Conan Hayes, Ross Williams and Kalani Robb -- will see action in today's third round.

Special Olympics events

Twenty Special Olympics 5-a-side soccer teams and 30 bocce teams will compete tomorrow in the fourth annual Aukake Classic at Waiau District Park in Pearl City.

Bocce is an Italian game similar to lawn bowling.

Opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m.
