This listing of new books about Hawaii, by Hawaii writers or published in Hawaii runs the last Friday of each month.
"Move to Strike": By Perri O'Shaughnessy (Delacorte Press); 400 pages; paperback; ISBN 0-385-33277-7; $23.95This legal thriller, now No. 13 on Publishers Weekly hardcover fiction bestseller list, depicts the life of Nina Reilly, a savvy lawyer living in Lake Tahoe. She is mourning the loss of her husband, haunted by a killer that still may be tracking her and is about to take the toughest case of her career. The book is by sisters Pamela and Mary O'Shaughnessy, writing under the name Perri. Pamela lives in Kailua.
"ReImagining the American Pacific: From South Pacific to Bamboo Ridge and Beyond": By Rob Wilson (Duke University Press); ISBN 0-8223-2523-3; paperback; 295 pages; $18.95.Rob Wilson, a western Connecticut native who was educated at UC-Berekely, has spent enough time here as a professor of English at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa to become caught up in the argument of what separates the "global" from the "local."Drawing from works as diverse as those by Herman Melville, James Michener, Bamboo Ridge writers, musicals such as "South Pacific," and the TV series "Baywatch," he demonstrates the ways in which "local" identity has been constructed as a protective device for surviving racism and encroaching transnational flows of business, finance and media.
While such notions are not new to those who grew up here, they are worth a second thought when presented from this "outsider's" perspective.
Though written in the language of "academia," Wilson's sense of humor comes through.
"An Underwater Guide to Indonesia": By R. Charles Anderson (University of Hawai'i Press); ISBN 0-8248-2368-0; 160 pages; hardcover; $20.95Conservation seems to be at the heart of marine biologist R. Charles Anderson's work. He offers an introduction to the marine life that surrounds Indonesia, a country comprising an estimated 17,500 islands and encompassing more ocean than land.Rather than offering a guide to the best diving and snorkeling sites, ground he's covered as a contributor to "Diving Indonesia," Anderson discusses the habitats of open sea; mangrove forests; marine lakes; and fringing, barrier and atoll reefs.
This book pays tribute to the creatures of the deep with 122 pages of glorious color photos of fish, featherstars, sea cucumbers and sea squirts. Those intending to jump into Indonesia waters may want to familiarize themselves with the more poisonous denizens described and pictured.
There are also hard-to-get photos of nocturnal fishes.
Those who view this amazing array of creatures will feel protective of this environment Indonesians refer to as "tanah air kita," "our land and water."
