Also joining the 55th annual festivities will be Billy Simms (Oklahoma, 1978), George Rogers (South Carolina, 1980), Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh, 1976), Johnny Rodgers (Nebraska, 1972) and Mike Rozier (Nebraska, 1983). They will be in Maui during the entire bowl week.
Danny Wuerffel (Florida), the 1996 Heisman winner, is among the group of big-name quarterbacks. Others are recent College Football Hall of Fame inductee Billy Kilmer and NFL Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle.
Completing the list are kickers Kevin Butler and Sean Landetta.
Crusaders top first poll
The Saint Louis Crusaders were just one ballot away from being a unanimous pick as the No. 1 state football team in the state by HawaiiSportsNetwork.com yesterday.The defending state champions garnered 55 first-place votes in HSN's high school football coaches and media poll.
In second place was Kahuku with 464 points, followed by Kamehameha, which received the remaining first-place vote and 413 points.
Garcia advances
Sunny Garcia was among the six Hawaii surfers to advance after round one of the Hossegor (France) Rip Curl Pro yesterday.Garcia, the current ratings leader, beat defending event champion Mick Lowe of Australia and wild card entrant Patrick Beven.
Andy Irons of Hawaii scored a perfect 10 from the judges to defeat current world champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia. Irons advances to tomorrow's third round while Occhilupo will have to surf today in the second round.
Also advancing after winning their respective heats were Hawaii's Shane Dorian, Conan Hayes, Ross Williams and Kalani Robb.
East Oahu falls
East Oahu dropped a 2-1 decision to California yesterday in the Cal Ripken World Series in Mattoon, Ill.Reid Matsumura took the loss despite allowing just four hits. He doubled in East Oahu's lone run in the third.
