Kahuku anxious
for rematch

"Rumble in the Rockies" was so good a sequel is in the works.

Call it "Battle on the Beach."

Nationally ranked Skyline edged Kahuku, 24-21, in Salt Lake City on Friday on a touchdown with 18 seconds left, and the Red Raiders have wasted no time in trying to get a rematch.

The two-time Oahu Interscholastic Association champions invited the Eagles, winners of the past five Utah state titles, to play a game in Hawaii next year.

Skyline must receive approval to play a game out of state from the Utah school board.

The Red Raiders are scheduled to return home late tonight.

They start their league season Friday against visiting Leilehua in one of six OIA varsity openers.

TOP TEN:

The Star-Bulletin's first state rankings of the season have defending state champion St. Louis at No. 1 after it beat Mililani on Friday, 36-10. (See Page C-6 for Friday's and Saturday's preseason scores.)

St. Louis hosts the Samoana Mighty Sharks of American Samoa on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Aloha Stadium before starting the regular season against Damien on Sep. 2.

The rest of the top 10: 2. Waianae, 3. Kahuku, 4. Waimea, 5. McKinley, 6. Mililani, 7. Kamehameha, 8. Iolani, 9. Farrington, 10. Kailua.

MIL OPENS THIS WEEK:

King Kekaulike and Maui meet Friday in the Maui Interscholastic League opener.

On Saturday, Lahainaluna plays St. Anthony.

KAPOLEI SCORES:

In a junior varsity game of note Saturday, Kailua beat Kapolei, 35-6.

It was the first game ever for Kapolei. The all-freshmen Hurricanes trailed 35-0 at halftime, but scored after intermission on a 38-yard pass from Kaipo-Noa Kaheaka-Enhada to Warren Simanu.
