Hawaii's two yokozuna (grand champions) have been ranked in the top positiions for the Autum Grand Sumo Tournament next month in Tokyo, according to the new rankings released today. Top rankings for yokozuna

Akebono (Chad Rowan of Wamanalo), will retain the top east yokozuna (grand champion) rank in the Sept. 3-17 event after winning the previous tournament at 13-2, his 10th career victory.
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), will be the top west yokozuna. Another grand champion Takanohana, who pulled out of the July tournament because of injury, was placed just below Akebono on the east.
Canoe race canceled
The Duke Kahanamoku Long Distance Race for outrigger canoe paddlers was called off by the U.S. Coast Guard yesterday because of harsh weather conditions and rough seas.The men's race has been rescheduled for Sept. 9, logistics permitting. But because of the tight race schedule, the women's race won't be held this year.
Machado wins surf meet
U.S. surfer Rob Machado won his first World Championship Tour event in three years yesterday at Lacanau, France, defeatting Brazil's Armando Daltro in the final of the TCLacanau Pro.Hawaii's Sunny Garcia was ousted in the quarterfinals but remained atop the world ratings with 4,970 points. Hawaii's Shane Dorian is rated ninth with 3,510.
Arila, Graybill 15K victors
Gerardo Arila took male open honors in yesterday's Hickam Air Force Base 15K run with a time of 53 minutes, 14 seconds.David Heppner was second in 53:55, Kevin Rathbun third in 54:15. Rachel Graybill was the female open winner in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 21 seconds, followed by Chris Patrick (1:03:51) and Michelle Ripka (1:04:28).
Takata ninth in Atom Cup
Wahiawa's Tyler Takata, a member of the USAJudo junior world team, placed ninth in the Liberty Atom Cup 2000 in the 66 kg division in Hungary.The team is training in preparation for the Hyundai Junior World Championships which will take place in Tunisia in October.
League tennis champs
Ten teams from the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section have advanced to the national championship round of the world's largest adult recreational tennis league by winning sectional titles over the weekend on the Big Island.The women's champs were Hawn Hunis, Oahu (2.5); A Tennis Menace, Oahu (3.0); Howard Tacub Tennis, Oahu (3.5 and 4.0), and Maui Tropical (4.5).
The men's title winners were Village Park Dream Team, Oahu (3.0); Clock and Trophy, Oahu (3.5 and 4.0); Kaneohe, Oahu (4.5), and Hilo, East Hawaii (5.0).
