Slack-key Style

Makana (a.k.a. Matt Swalinkavich), 23, appeared more like a rock
star than a slack-key guitarist during the 18th Annual Hawaiian
Slack Key Guitar Festival yesterday on the grounds of the Royal
Hawaiian Hotel. "Oahu Style" was theme of this year's ki ho'alu
fest. Below, Clement Aleka-Gorai of Kaneohe
managed to tough out the elements.

Orphans Visit

Japanese orphans Ai Kitagawa, Hitomi Mizumoto and Yumi Ishihara,
left to right, are greeted yesterday morning by Russian wolfhound
Kolchak and his handler, Army Pvt. Buck Moore of the 27th Infantry
Regiment ("Wolfhounds"), supporters of Osaka's Holy Family
Home since 1949 and sponsors of annual visits by
its children since 1957.
