WARRIORS NOTEBOOK
Don't read too much into the batting order University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones used for his quarterbacks at the end of yesterday's practice. QB batting

order not final
Pro baseballFive of the six took turns leading the offense from one end of the field to the other in the team phase of practice. Sophomore Mike Harrison was first, Nick Rolovich second, Kevin Gilbride third, Timmy Chang fourth and Shawn Withy-Allen fifth.
Jones laughed to himself when asked yesterday if there was any reason to believe that this was the current order on the depth chart after the first week of practice.
"We've been using that rotation (minus freshman Chang) since last spring," Jones said. "That doesn't mean anything. We'll probably make an announcement who's starting at the end of next week or maybe early the following week. I'm not sure yet. We'll see."
Harrison and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison also laughed at the suggestion this was the order Jones would use in the season opener with Portland State.
"We mix it up all the time," Morrison said. "It doesn't mean anything. We just want to make sure everybody is getting enough repetitions without doing too much."
Harrison agreed.
"The race is still on," Harrison said. "Nobody knows who's going to be the starter."
Well, that may be, but several players said Harrison and Rolovich have separated themselves from the field and that one of those two will be the starter.
Flint faces surgery
One quarterback who won't be battling for the starting job is junior college transfer Jared Flint. He was scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery today to repair a torn rotator cuff.He will likely be lost for the season. If so, Flint will petition the NCAA for another year. If he loses, he will have only one season of college football left.
"I'm hopeful it won't be that serious," Flint said. "But if it is, it will be devastating to me."
Peters off team
Former Kahuku High School product Leonard Peters won't be playing football for Hawaii this season.
Jones couldn't comment on why the freshman won't play, but it is believed to be for academic reasons. If that's true, Peters would be the second UH freshman recruit not to be academically eligible. The other was Northwest Mississippi College cornerback Shaddrick Carter.
Jones wasn't sure if Peters would go on a church mission and try to come back to the program in two years.
Newcomers on tape
Jones had thought about holding his first full scrimmage of the season this morning at Cooke Field, but opted to get the newcomers on tape, instead."We decided we're not going to scrimmage any of our guys on the two-deep chart," Jones said. "But during the team phase of (today's practice), we'll take a look at the young guys to get them on film."
Jones had thought of taking the team to Aloha Stadium today, and conceded the scheduled practice at the stadium next Saturday is on hold.
"We want to get out there one day this week," Jones said. "But I'm not sure how we're going to work that. The closed practice we had set for Aug. 26 is probably not going to happen."
Na Koa celebration
The Na Koa Club will hold its major fund-raiser Aug. 26 from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tickets are $100 a person that will include two end zone seats for the season opener with Portland State on Sept. 9.There will be a silent and a live auction that include trips to Japan and the neighbor islands. Proceeds for this event help fund the UH football program.

Team finishes
two-a-days"We're giving them this afternoon off because they have been so good," Wahine head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said.
The smile on Tenzing's face has been much broader this year over last. Two big reasons are the velvet-like practice field the Wahine use and their conditioning.
"Have you seen that field. It's marvelous. Our production is up. We're scoring lots of goals," said Tenzing.
"The players came back considerably more fit than last year, which is always a delight. I think many of them learned from last year."
So far, the injuries have been confined to the usual aches and pains, nothing serious. Tenzing is keeping his fingers crossed.
With the season opener Friday against Boise State, he has a pretty good idea who will get a starting nod.
"But now, I have surprises to deal with in terms of keeping team harmony, etcetera, but they are delightful surprises," Tenzing said.
Thirty players turned out for the team and Tenzing will keep as many as possible. The seven returning seniors, all candidates to start, are gone after the 2000 season.
"We need numbers. If I can train as many kids as possible this year, it's better next year," said Tenzing.
Goalkeeper shortage fixed
Depth between the posts got a little hairy for the Wahine this past summer. Tenzing thought he had plenty of backup for senior starter Demarre Sanchez. Then sophomore-to-be recruit Stephanie Pearson told the coaches she wasn't returning. About six weeks ago, Kimela Keahiolalo, a sophomore walk-on last year, decided she wasn't going to play this year.
"We were going with one goalkeeper while looking high and low for another goalkeeper. It was a rather scary situation," Tenzing said.
The answer was 5-foot-7 Danalyn Ong, a Pearl City High School graduate who transferred back to UHlast spring. She had played for Pacific University (Forest Grove, Ore.) last fall and posted seven shutouts for the 9-8-2 Boxers.
"Just so you know we're not sleeping on the job, we had a chance at getting a wonderful goalkeeper, a regional goalkeeper, 6-feet tall and we had to tell her we weren't recruiting goalkeepers," Tenzing said.
Unfortunately, the chance to get the "wonderful" keeper came before the defections.
Waipio update
The stadium field at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park is ready."Everything will be done except for some loose ends to tighten up," said Art Lambert, project manager for Goodfellow Bros.
"Four more light polls go up (today) and will be energized (tomorrow). The parking lot will be paved (tomorrow)."
"The field is in beautiful shape. The scoreboard is in, but it's crunch time with some of the infrastructure," said Manny Menendez, executive director of the city's Office of Economic Development.
"It will absolutely be ready."
Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano, UH assistant athletic director for women's sports, will lead a team of athletic department officials on a site visit Monday.
Around the pitch
Seniors Camille Kalama, Demarre Sanchez and Leila Wai are the Wahine captains this year... Michelle Edwards, a defender who transferred from Ohlone Junior College last year, but was injured, has been granted a medical redshirt year on appeal to the NCAA.
