Aiea in Junior
LL title game

Aiea was to face Langley, British Columbia, today for the championship of the 20th Junior League World Series of Baseball in Taylor, Mich.

It is a rematch of the nearly four-hour marathon that spanned Thursday and yesterday in which Aiea defeated the Canadian team, 7-3, in 12 innings.

The victory gave undefeated Aiea the spot in today's final game, scheduled to start at 11 a.m. HST. Canada came through the consolation bracket of the tournament for 13-14 year-olds yesterday with a 3-1 win over Florida to earn the rematch.

The marathon game was restarted yesterday in the 11th with the score tied at 3-3.

In the top of the 12th, Aiea's Justin Goo doubled in Aaron Asher and Brandon Asuka for the go-ahead runs. Chase Kaiuwailani followed with a two-run single that scored Goo and Blake Lamug to put the game out of reach.

Dustin Grace pitched two innings of hitless relief to pick up the victory.

Ah Mow, Bown lead U.S.

Former University of Hawaii all-Americans Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown helped the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team to its second consecutive upset at the $1.5 million Grand Prix with a 26-28, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 15-12 victory over No. 4 China yesterday in Yu Xi.

The win comes just five days after the Americans defeated No. 5 Korea in four sets. The U.S. is 3-4 in the eight-nation tournament.

The victory snapped a 10-match losing streak to China, dating back to 1996. It was also the first time in this quadrennial that the Americans have defeated a team ranked in the top four.

Setter Ah Mow ran a balanced attack for the Americans, with each of the five starting hitters posting 10 or more kills. Danielle Scott posted a career-high 27 kills and hit .522. Middle blocker Bown had 11 kills while hitting .500.

Lambert has 13 kills

At Sao Paolo, Brazil, Hawaii's Mike Lambert had 13 kills but the U.S. men's national volleyball team could not overcome several key injuries in losing to Canada, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 18-25, 14-16, last night at the Americas' Cup.

The U.S. will meet top-seeded Brazil in the semifinals today.

California teams perfect

Top-seeded La Reina and Mira Costa high schools from California remained unbeaten going into today's semifinals of the Iolani Girls Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

La Reina faced Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) and Mira Costa met Punahou in today's semifinals of the double-elimination event.

Brooks leads Bruin

Former Punahou standout and UCLA all-American Brandon Brooks was named co-MVP after leading the Bruins to a 6-4 victory over Stanford in the championship game of the men's open division of the Hawaiian Invitational water polo tournament yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
