breast cancer

Star-Bulletin staff

Free screening mammogram coupons will be presented to the first 40 qualified women 40 and older who show up at Stadium Chevron, 4581 Salt Lake Blvd., from 6 to 10 a.m. on Sept. 7.

Chevron has joined St. Francis Medical Center, Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program, and the Hawaii Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to provide the coupons.

Mammograms will be given at St. Francis.

Chevron also will distribute free "Breast Care Fast Facts for Women" audiocassettes with tips to prevent breast cancer, including the three-step program for breast health care endorsed by the American Cancer Society.

Na Leo's lead vocalists, Angela Morales, Nalani Choy and Lehua Kalima, will join Chevron in giving away the mammogram coupons.

"Like many women out there, I didn't think this disease could affect me," Morales said. "That is, until last January when I found a lump in my breast. Thankfully, it turned out to be benign, but my personal experience has made me vigilant about doing my monthly self-breast exams."

Representatives also will be on hand to pre-register people for the 2000 Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure Sept. 24 at Kapiolani Park. Registration forms are available at participating Chevron service stations Sept. 3-24.

For more information, call 949-7575.

An estimated 500 Hawaii women will be diagnosed with the disease this year and an additional 100 women will die of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
