Holoholo Slack Key: Holoholo should
go international
By Ray Kane and Yuki "Alani" Yamauchi (Respect RES-37)THE international popularity of traditional Hawaiian music is reaffirmed with the second album by Hawaiian slack key master Ray Kane and Japan's Yuki "Alani" Yamauchi. Kane's natural, well-worn voice is a striking contrast to his "soft" ki ho'alu style. Yamauchi, his long-time friend and protege, plays second guitar and adds 'ukulele and steel guitar. Kane's wife, Elodia, adds a second voice on "Manu 'O 'O."
With more than 70 minutes of music, background information on the 18 classic songs, and Kane's autobiographical liner notes, this is a perfect introduction to Kane and his music.

Lessons in Life:
By Bridgette Bryant (Aire 85566)DANIEL Ho's latest Aire album is a children's album with Bridgette Bryant. She's the voice. He's the producer and primary musician.
The duo co-wrote most of the songs and have crafted more than simple kiddie tunes. Several, like "Smile," transcend age. Afterall, who doesn't look better when they smile? Bassist Dean Taba joins in on a fresh take on "What A Wonderful World" that gives Byrant a shot at mainstream radio play.

Martin Live with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra:
By Martin Nievera (MCA Universal 0088 112354 2)MARTIN Nievera, born in the Philippines, was 16 when his family returned there after his father, Roberto "Bert" Nievera, left the Society of Seven. He became a multifaceted Filipino superstar and recorded this two-disc album on his 38th birthday. It reaffirms his stature as a singer fully qualified to top Billboard's Hot 100 and Pop Albums charts.
Nievera has sung Broadway anthems for years; an expansive medley of songs from several classic shows is one of the most powerful and impressive selections. "Wildflower" shows his skill in reinterpreting other artists' hits; he shares fresh perspectives on several of his own hits as well.
"Before You Say Goodbye" gains special poignancy with the narrative he uses to introduce it; there's no idle patter and every word adds impact. A duet with his father is a happier musical snapshot of his family life.
