Capitol meet to address
mental health relocation

State legislators will meet at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the state Capitol with people affected by the proposed relocation of adult mental health services from the Diamond Head Health Center.

Sen. Suzanne Chun Oakland (D, Palama-Alewa Heights-Kalihi), who heads the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, said the meeting is "to assure consumers that the Department of Health will work with them in considering any kind of move of their facility and program."

The Health Department has proposed moving adult mental health services for about 300 clients to the Lanakila Health Center in Kalihi-Palama. A Life Skills program for about 30 mentally impaired persons would go to the Honolulu Clubhouse at Fort Street Mall.

State Health Director Bruce Anderson said the moves are needed to provide more space for the children's mental health program on the first floor of the Diamond Head building.

Both the children's and adult mental health services programs are under federal court orders with deadlines for improvements. The developmentally disabled program also is under a consent decree and is in the Diamond Head building.

Anderson postponed the moves until Sept. 22 following protests about the plan and the way it was handled by the DOH.

Roadblocks to be up for holiday weekend
