Iolani's new girls' varsity basketball coach is not really new at all at the Kamoku Street campus.

Glenn Takara, 38, is a 1980 Iolani graduate who has coached several different sports for the Raiders since 1986, including boys' and girls' basketball at several different levels.

Takara, named to the post by athletic director Judy Hiramoto yesterday, replaces Bernie Ching.

Ching, rehabilitating from knee replacement surgery, will continue as an assistant to boys' head coach Mark Mugiishi.

Iolani finished its Interscholastic League of Honolulu season at 9-6 last year, just missing the state tournament.

Takara looks forward to coaching one of the state's best players in senior point guard Monica Tokoro.

"We also have a lot of young talent coming up," Takara said.

"We'll probably go with a running style, with a lot of open-court pressure defense."

Takara is a graduate of Puget Sound University, where he played football.

Takara competed in varsity football, basketball and track and field while a student at Iolani. He earned first-team ILH honors as a defensive back.

In another Raiders coaching change, Steve Shishido takes over as varsity girls' and boys' golf coach. He replaces Eugene Nishimoto.

PUNAHOU NAMES TRACK COACH:

Louis Johnson is the new head coach of the Punahou boys' varsity track and field team.

Johnson, a 1975 Punahou graduate, has coached for the program the past 13 years. He was an assistant varsity and head coach for the Buffanblu intermediate boys the past five years. Johnson replaces Dacre Bowen, who resigned after last season.

"He's of easy-going nature and a real players' coach," Buffanblu athletic director Tom Holden said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge to our program and will continue the outstanding tradition of Punahou track."

Punahou has won 26 state boys track and field championships since 1959, including four consecutive until finishing second to Kamehameha last spring.

Meanwhile, the Punahou varsity baseball head coaching job has been opened for outside applicants, Holden said.

The position was vacated by Kala Ka'aihue, who resigned after last season.

Interested parties should apply to Holden at the school by Friday, Aug. 25.
