Men's and women's Open competition started at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, age-group girls' playat Iolani and age-group boys at Punahou.
One hundred teams from Hawaii, California, Washington, Maryland, Canada, Australia and Japan will play 270 matches before championships are decided Friday and Saturday.
Admission is free. Parking at UHcosts $3.
Mililani softball team out
Mililani Prep was eliminated from championship play by the California Thunder, 7-3, Saturday (?) in the ASA National 18 and Under Softball Tournament at Normal, Ill.Earlier in the day, the Hawaii team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Raiders of New York, 3-2.
The Blazing Angels of Pennsylvania then handed Mililani Prep its first loss of the double-elimination tournament, by a runaway 10-0 margin.
Among the tournament standouts for Mililani Prep were Mitzi Ing, with a 4-1 pitching record, and infielder Ianetta Lei, who batted over .400.
Longboard surf meet
Amateur and professional longboard surfers will compete in the Hawaiian South Shore Open, third event in the Ocean Club Series, Saturday and Sunday at Kewalo Basin, beginning at 8 a.m. each day.The Vans Pro professional division offers $1,500 in prize money.

3 medalists from isles
Sanoa Aina of Waipahu, Kalena Hanohano of Waianae and Jonathan Rellin of Kauai won bronze medals Saturday in the national Hershey Youth Program track and field meet at Hershey, Pa.Aina took third place in the softball throw for girls 9-10 years old with a toss of 132 feet, 10 inches. Hanohano was third in the girls' 11-12 softball throw at 158 feet, 1 inch and Rellin was third in the boys 11-12 standing long jump with a leap of 7 feet, 11 inches.
Others from Hawaii who reached the national finals were Courtney McCall of Ford Island, seventh in the girls' 11-12 400-meter run in 1 minute, 1.16 seconds; Kristine Noga of Waipahu, fourth in the girls' 13-14 softball throw at 177-6, and Alyssa Chun of Kaneohe, sixth in the girls' 11-12 200-meter dash in 30.56 seconds.
Waikiki boxing card
Three IBA world championship bouts are scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel as professional boxing returns to Hawaii with a "Tangle in the Tropics" series of monthly cards.The featured bouts will be Konstantin Semerdjiev of Russia vs. American Sean Fitzgerald for the super middleweight title, Sergei Liakhovoch of Russia vs. American Anthony Curry for the heavyweight crown, and Kathy Williams of Canada vs. Tracy Moulton of the U.S. for the women's bantamweight title.
The "Tangle in the Tropics" series is being promoted by Hawaii Professional Boxing, Inc., a Don King affiliate. Tickets for the Aug. 29 card are available by calling 526-8696.
U. of Phoenix tourney
The Hawaii Campus of the University of Phoenix will hold its inaugural charity golf tournament Friday, Oct. 6, at Hickam Air Force Base's Mamala Bay course.
