Chris Ball, a Hawaii Baptist Academy graduate, took gold in the K-1 1,000-meter race and teamed with Andy Bussey, a Punahou graduate, to win a gold medal in the 1,000-meter four-man kayak.
Mike Stock, also of Punahou, won two gold medals for Hawaii, one in the 500-meter K-2, the other with James Farnum in the K-4 500- meter race.
Farnum won a gold in the K-2 1,000-meter race.
Megan Bussey, another Punahou graduate and freshman at Dartmouth College, was one of the four paddlers in the winning women's junior 500-meter K-4 boat.
In addition, Eric Chun, the junior team coach, won first place in the intermediate 500 K-1 race.
In addition to their gold medals, the team won eight silver medals and seven bronze medals.
Weber, Dwyer golf victors
Hyon Weber finished with a net 142 yesterday in the Oahu Country Club Ladies Invitational golf tournament to claim the overall low net title.Weber totaled rounds of 75 and 67 at Oahu Country Club.
Bridgett Dwyer fired rounds of 79 and 77 for overall low gross honors.
QB Club lunch speakers
Kamehameha football coach Kanani Souza and Kaimuki athletic director Ray Fujino will be the featured speakers at Monday's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant.
Local athletes in Hershey
Six young Hawaii athletes selected to the Pacific Southwest Regional team were to compete today in the 2000 Hershey National Track and Field Meet at Hershey, Pa.The six national finalists are Sanoe Aina of Waipahu (9-10 girls' softball throw); Alyssa Chun of Kaneohe (11-12 girls' 200-meter dash); Kalena Hanohano of Waianae (11-12 girls' softball throw); Cartney McCall of Ford Island (11-12 girls' 400-meter run); Kristina Noga of Waipahu (13-14 girls' softball throw), and Jonathan Rellin of Lihue (11-12 boys' standing long jump).
WAC holding its own
The Western Athletic Conference is among the top 10 conferences in athletics in the nation, according to a recently released compilation.The WACranked sixth in men's sports and eighth in women's sports in a survey that covered the WACvs. other conferences in all sports.
Conference teams are awarded points on the basis of 20 points for a first-place NCAAfinish by a team from the conference, 19 for second place, etc.
The Southeastern (men) and Pacific 10 (women) conferences finished on top in the survey.
Aloha State Karate
The 18th annual Aloha State Traditional Karate Championships are scheduled for Aug. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Aliamanu Military Reservation Gym.Competition will be in kata, kumite and kobudo (weapons) events. Karate or martial arts students of all ages and ranks are eligible.
Entry fees are $15 for one event, $30 for two and $40 for three (pre-registration); $20 for one event, $35 for two and $50 for three (at the door).

Dougherty in Maui field
Ed Dougherty, who won his first Senior PGATour title at the Caldwell Banker Burnet Classic last weekend, will play in the EMC2 Kaanapali Classic Oct. 16-22 on Maui.Also committed to play in the $1.1 million event at the Kaanapali North Course are TDWaterhouse Classic winner Dana Quigley, Toshiba Senior Classic champ Allen Doyle, along with former Kaanapali winners Bob Charles and George Archer.
Atuaia plays for Wolves
Kahuku graduate Alema Atuaia, a 6-foot, 255-pound junior from Laie, is a defensive lineman on the Northern State (S.D.) University football team. The Wolves from Aberdeen, S.D., were 9-2 last season.
