Basketball Hall of Famer Pete Newell announced this morning at a Waikiki hotel that the 23rd Big Man Camp will run from Monday through Friday next week at Kamehameha Schools' Kekuhaupio Gym, and about 40 percent of the camp participants will be pros.

The camp, presented by the Japan Basketball League, will be open to the public.

The pros will appear from 8:30-11:30 a.m. each day while the college players will appear from 3-6 p.m.

Nick Vander Laan, a 6-foot-10 University of California recruit from St. Thomas More High School in Oakdale, Conn., was scheduled to appear this morning with Newell to unveil plans for the camp.

Names of NBA players were not available at press time.

Players will be staying at the Westin Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki.

Newell, who will turn 85 on Aug. 31, was the first coach to win the NIT (San Francisco, 1949), the NCAA Tournament (California, 1959) and an Olympic gold medal (1960).
